Cytogenetics

Abstract:
Cytogenetic studies are appropriate for the diagnostic evaluation of acute and chronic leukemias as well as the myeloproliferative disorders and certain malignant lymphomas. In conventional cytogenetics, the cells are examined in metaphase.

Assessment:
Twenty-five metaphases are normally analyzed. Results are reported on how many of the 25 metaphases show a certain cytogenetic abnormality. In chronic myelocytic leukemia, for example, 25/25 examined metaphases normally exhibit the Philadelphia chromosome.

Indication:
Acute and chronic leukemias, myeloproliferative disorders, certain malignant lymphomas.
