Immunphenotyping

Abstract:
Immunphenotyping is an important component in the diagnosis of leukemias and lymphoproliferative disorders. Tagged, monoclonal antibodies are most commonly used. They attach to the antigens of the cell surface which show a typical pattern depending on cell type and/or stage of development. These patterns are usually detected with a flow cytometer instrument.

Assessment:
Leukemic blasts and the lympocytic cells can be identified according to a typical antigen pattern as a specific type of leukemia and/or lymphoma. However, it is important to note that immunphenotyping should only be performed in conjunction with cytological and histological examinations.

Indication:
Classification of neoplastic cells in leukemias and lymphoproliferative diseases.
