Immature and mature basophils

Definition:
Basophils basically go through the same maturation stages as neutrophils. However, they are only recognizable as basophils if the specific basophilic granules occur. This is the case only from the myelocyte stage on. Consequently, basophils in bone marrow are components of granulopoiesis. They must be distinguished from the mast cells which are so-called tissue basophils. They constitute about of nucleated bone marrow cells (myelogram).

Appearance:
Basophilic granules are loosely arranged and vary in size. The nucleus is partially hidden by the granules. Band and segmented basophils can be seen.
