Acanthocytes

Definition:
Acanthocytes are erythrocytes with irregular spike-like projections. Their life span and their osmotic fragility is normal.

Occurrence:
Acanthocytes occur naturally in hereditary abetalipoproteinemia. They are acquired in liver as well as in post-splenectomy.
