Gel test

Abstract:
In the gel test, agglutinated erythrocytes remain on the surface of the gel after centrifugation (positive result), unagglutinated erythrocytes pass through the gel to the bottom of the tube (negative result). The antibodies causing the agglutination of the erythrocytes can be present in the serum, added in the laboratory or already incorporated in the gel.

Assessment:

The gel test is assessed as shown on the image on the left.

Indication:
Antibody screening, crossmatching before blood transfusion, identification of surface antigens of erythrocytes, direct and indirect antiglobulin test.
