Poikilocytosis

Definition:

Poikilocytosis refers to the different abnormal erythrocyte shapes. Usually, poikilocytosis accompanies anisocytosis.

Occurrence:
Poikilocytosis occurs

• in severe anemias, especially if ineffective erythropoiesis is present
• in primary myelofibrosis
• in acquired dyserythropoietic anemia
• in hereditary pyropoikilocytosis
