Acanthocytes

Definition:

Acanthocytes are erythrocytes with two to multiple irregular spike-like projections. Their life span and their osmotic fragility is normal.

Occurrence:

• Hereditary abetalipoproteinemia.
• Other hereditary, in part neurodegenerative syndromes.
• Acquired in liver diseases
• In post-splenectomy
